The Best Clean Romantic Fantasy Books for Teens and Adult Readers (No Spice - Part 2)

Brandon Sanderson, Naomi Novik, Elizabeth Lim, and more

· Fantasy,Romance

Welcome to part 2 of the clean fantasy romance recommendations. In this context, clean refers to books that have romance but nothing sexual or explicit. I'm a fan of cleaner reads, especially when it comes to romance, and I know there are others out there who enjoy them too, so I'd love to share my knowledge.

Here are 6 more book recommendations for clean (no spice) fantasy books with romantic elements.

(Who I am, so you know who is giving you suggestions: My name is Jaysee. I am an indie author and specialize in romantic fantasy and horror. Don't worry, there isn't any horror in this list, though I will make one of those lists someday.)

1. Mistborn

My Rating: A Tier (9/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Magic / Action / Ballroom scenes

A group of rebels try to kill the godlike tyrant controlling their world.

This story is quite long compared to my other recs but it definitely leans into the YA aspect (compared to the next 2 in the series). It has some great action, characters, and romance. The ballroom scenes with a bookish love interest on the wrong side of the war was a fun, unexpected twist.

2. Echo North

My Rating: B Tier (8/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Fairytale Retelling / Beauty and the Beast / Magic

Beauty and the Beast but with magical books, a witch villain, and a wolf instead of a beast.

I got this book for the cover but was pleasantly surprised by the contents. It has some pacing issues but as a whole, I quite enjoyed it. It's a concept I haven't seen in a while.

3. Red Queen

My Rating: A Tier (9/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Dystopian / Royalty / Magic / Love Triangle

A girl tries to destroy the political system that got her sister killed.

The magic system is what stands out in this story and it had a really cool hook. The plot itself was somewhat simplistic and I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, but I still liked the story while reading it. This is the first in a series.

4. Six Crimson Cranes

My Rating: A Tier (9.5/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Asian / Royalty / Magic / Love triangle

An evil queen curses the MC and her brothers. It's up to her to find her siblings and save them from the curse.

I loved the setting, the magic system, and how the plot progressed. The romance was enjoyable--the male lead was a kind, noble man, which is sometimes rare. The middle did drag a bit but the ending is absolutely worth it.

5. Spinning Silver

My Rating: A Tier (9/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Fae / Royalty / Magic / Villain love interest / Enemies to Lovers

The story follows three female POVs. One is a poor girl who makes herself rich through intelligent debt collecting and catches the eye of an evil fae-like man. The second is a princess who is forced to marry an man possessed by a fire demon.

I've really enjoyed the stories by this author. The magic is immersive, the characters are layered and mature, and the romance (while extremely subtle in this) is great.

6. Dreams Lie Beneath

broken image

My Rating: B Tier (7.5/10)

Genres and Tropes: Fantasy / Romance / Enemies to Lovers / Magic

Dream based magic and an enemies to lovers trope combine.

The magic system is what stands out here. It relies on dreams and the magic also has limits. The story definitely had a slow pace (I noticed the other books by the author are the same) but if you don't mind that, I think you'll enjoy this.

So there you have it. These are all my (current) romance fantasy recommendations. If I read anymore really good ones, I'll make another list in the future. Until then, I'll be recommending other genres (horror, scifi, dystopia, scifi, etc.).
